Excerpt
Excerpt: The United Nations is, as the Secretary-General noted on September 23, 2003, at a fork in the road. We are at the point when bold and even ?radical changes? need to be considered if ?to continue on the basis agreed then? (1945) will not ensure the peoples of the world can work together for the common good. ?This may be a moment no less decisive than 1945 itself, when the United Nations was founded.? Decisions being made and avoided today will be profoundly significant for this and future generations. The Interreligious and International Federation for World Peace (IIFWP) a worldwide alliance of peace activists and NGOs are concerned that the United Nations? ability to remain the pre-eminent international organization is in jeopardy. As we observe the current debates on renewal underway, they appear to have narrowed to a critical but incomplete list of issues perhaps better described as ?rearrangement.? We noticed that consideration of some key points are being overlooked and that ?radical reform? is not being debated in the light of significant current trends that have long-term and, we believe, revolutionary import.
